Key management or key control can be defined as the storage, use and tracking of physical keys. The landwell key management system includes key storage devices, lock rings with identification chips and key audit software. This combination of hardware and software enables users to move beyond physical key controls to more complex and integrated access control solutions with accountability.
With a keyed system, users can only access the keys for which they have authorization, and the keys must be returned to a fixed location. If a specific key is not returned or other identified circumstances, an email alert can be sent to the Security Manager to notify them. The alarm can also be triggered under a range of conditions, such as using the emergency key to enter the system, three consecutive invalid user codes, opening the door for more than 10 seconds (or other time option) after use, keys not being returned on time, etc.
The driving force behind the development of Landwell's smart key management system is clearly the development of advanced application software. This allows the system to be virtually hardware-independent in terms of the actual configuration of the access technologies and their integration with the access control and security system control systems themselves. The software also provides remotely accessible data tracking for each key management system and each key within those systems.

The Key Tag is the heart of the key management system. The RFID key tag can be used for identification and the triggering of an event on any RFID reader. The key tag enables easy access without waiting time and without tedious handing signing in and signing out.
The Key receptor strips come standard with 10 key positions and 8 key positions. Locking key slots strip lock key tags in place and will only unlock them to authorized users. As such, the system provides the highest level of security and control for those with access to the protected keys and is recommended for those who need a solution that restricts access to each individual key. Dual-color LED indicators at each key position guide the user to quickly locate keys, and provide clarity as to which keys a user is allowed to remove. Another function of the LEDs is that they illuminate a pathway to the correct return position, should a user place a key set in the wrong place.
